Dept ensures houses, security and comfort for destitute families around Rustenburg
The Housing Development programme in Bokone Bophirima’s Department of Local Government and Human Settlements has moved in swiftly to improve the living condition of three destitute families in Robega, Chaneng and Luka villages in Rustenburg local municipalities, by providing through integrated human settlements.
Motlagoilwe Molwane (77) has been staying with his parents in worn out mud house since he was a child. Although the house looks like it can be blown away by strong winds at anytime, the only reason it is still intact, is because of the trees close-by that have served as windbreakers, all these years.
An old age grant recipient, Scotch Hara (85) of Batho pele section in Robega, stays with his wife, Sharma (83) in small a mud house that has weathered the storms. The Hara’s wish of owning a decent house one day, was a dream they thought they would never live to see happening.
“My wife and I had already given up on having our own house because as you can see, we are not young anymore. I am really glad that we would soon be getting our very own house which will have running water and electricity”, said Hara.
Orphaned Koketsto Chauke (18) stays in shack with her four month child and uncle and they survive on Chauke’s child support grant. Chauke’s parents passed away in 2009. Although her uncle also does odd jobs to put food on the table, the money is not enough for them to build a house. Chauke has also been enlisted as a beneficiary for a Break New Ground house which would be built next to their shack.
‘’The department has planned to deliver a total of 7 680 sites and 12 581 housing units totalling, across villages, townships and small dorpies in the 2016/17 financial year. Our programme to provide houses, security and comfort, continues unabated’’, said MEC Fenny Gaolaolwe.
