Department to spend over R2 billion on human settlements development
The Department of Local Government and Human Settlement has budgeted at least R2.1 billion for the 2016/2017 financial year on integrated human settlements development throughout Bokone Bophirima. This will translate into servicing of 7 680 sites and building 12 581 housing units thus creating 20 261 housing opportunities in the 2016/17 financial year across villages, townships and small dorpies.
Of the R2.1 million budget, over R930 million will be spent on creating housing opportunities in and around mining towns in Bojanala, Madibeng, Rustenburg, Kgetleng rivier, Moses Kotane and Matlosana local municipalities.
Acting MEC for Local Government and Human Settlements, Fenny Gaolaolwe mentioned in the 2016/2017 Budget Speech presented today that 142 military veterans houses will be constructed, 6 817 title deeds transferred to new home owners, whilst 15 079 title deeds will be processed to address the current backlog of 64 414 outstanding title deeds.
“We want to ensure that areas that never befitted from housing delivery programmes are allocated housing opportunities. The department will host the housing infrastructure lekgotla later this year to assess the state of human settlements and to coordinate infrastructure development and map out ways of upgrading housing infrastructure economic opportunities in villages, townships and small dorpies”. said Gaolaolwe
