Parliament on Military Veterans

Department services not reaching Military Veterans

The Portfolio Committee on Defence and Military Veterans is concerned by the inability by the Department of Military Veterans to reach all veterans. This has led to inability by veterans to access all services and benefits that the department offers.

To remedy this situation, the Committee has instructed the department to amplify their communications drives to educate the veterans about the department. The Committee is of the view that the use of road shows, radio advertisements and other mass communications platforms will also enable the department to wrap up the process of updating their database of military veterans.

The Committee was also worried by the pace ofswe service delivery to the country’s military veterans. “It is of concern that the department has not been able to deliver efficient and effective services to our military veterans. This is evidenced by large number of under spending in core areas of the mandate,” said Mr Malusi Motimele, the Chairperson of the Committee.

To mitigate these challenges, the Committee has called for a turnaround strategy to be drafted and presented to the Committee urgently. The Committee is of the view that the current underperformance cannot be left unabated and speedy resolutions must be found to ensure that the departments achieves its mandate.

The Committee has committed to guide the department as it navigates these high winds. “The Committee’s main preoccupation is ensuring that our military veterans receive services and benefits as envisioned when the department was established,” Mr Motimele concluded.
