Mpumalanga Education hands over Steve Tshwete Boarding School in Somaphepha Village, 27 Jul

The Department of Education in collaboration with the Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport will officially handover the state of the art Steve Tshwete Boarding School on 27 July 2016, 9h00 at Somaphepha village, Steve Tshwete Local municipality.

Steve Tshwete Boarding School is the 5th Boarding School to be established by the Mpumalanga Provincial Government to do away with small farm and multi-grade schools and to address challenges experienced by learners and teachers from these schools.

These Boarding Schools were also established to improve conditions for teaching and learning of farm learners and teachers, mitigate challenges of scholar transport, reduce levels of learner drop out (especially farm learners) and further improve the quality of teaching to ensure that teachers specialize as opposed to one teacher teaching all the grades.

The Boarding Schools initiative will also play a major role in addressing the plight of child headed families and that of orphan children, reduce the burden from parents who are residing in farms and to expose the farm children to world class schools.

So far the province has established five boarding schools, namely Shongwe, Izimbali, Ezakheni, Emakhazeni and Steve Tshwete Boarding School.

These boarding schools are No Fee Schools, the leaners receive four meals per day, they are also provided with free school uniform and their laundry is catered for. Steve Tshwete Boarding school was operationalized on 18 July (Mandela day) this year and accommodates 924 learners from six schools which were closed down to bring it to fruition. 

The boarding school consist of an Administration Block, 28 Classroom, 03 Grade R Classrooms, a Library, Computer Centre, Laboratory, Ablution Blocks, Kitchen, Dining /Multi-Purpose Hall, Dormitories for Boys/Girls, Guard House, Electricity, Water, Sewer, Fence, Ramps & Rails, Paved walkways, Parking area and a Bus stop, Delivery yard, Drying yard, External Works, Staff Residence, Multi -purpose sport Grounds, Netball Courts as well as soccer field.

The Honorable Premier, DD Mabuza will grace the occasion and His address will be broadcast live on Ligwalagwala, Ikwekwezi FM, Radio Pulpit and in 11 community Radio Stations.
