Programme to empower the new councillors on the cards
The Integrated Councillor Induction Programme (ICIP) driven by South African Local Government Association (SALGA) in collaboration with the Eastern Cape Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) will be launched in East London this weekend. This is an accredited programme targeting 1 490 new cadre of Councillors who have joined the local government sphere after the 3 August 2016 Local Government Elections.
The ICIP programme is designed to prepare Councillors to understand how the local government sphere operates with a focus on their leadership roles, legislation applicable to Local Government, key municipal processes and developmental Local Government in general.
The five day programme which kick starts on Monday the 5th September 2016 focussing on Councillors in Buffalo City Metro and Amathole District Municipalities. From the 12 September to 7 October it will be rolled out to all other District Municipalities of the Eastern Cape Province.
The ICIP programme is supported by key stakeholders such as Provincial Treasury, Office of The Premier and the Local Government Sector Education and Training Authority (LGSETA).
Cogta MEC Fikile Xasa said the new crop of Councillors has an enormous task ahead of them to creating a better life for all our communities. The new Councillors have a responsibility to put the interest and concerns of our people first deal with issues of service delivery head on.
“The Councillors must hit the ground running as they do not have the luxury of time at their disposal. The people have spoken. We acknowledge and accept the message. We must deliver quality services to them without fail,” said MEC Xasa.
