Church must work with government to fight crime
The journey to a better South Africa is not easy; it is like the journey of the Israelites from Egypt to the land of Canaan. That is according to North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo.
Premier Supra Mahumapelo was addressing hundreds of women parishioners in Pella yesterday at the closing of the 2016 Women Conference of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Southern Africa.
“Like the Israelites we came from oppression and slavery. We have to be patient because the journey is not an easy one. To repair the damage caused by colonialism and apartheid and transform South Africa into a united, democratic, non-sexist and non-racial country, is something that is not easy. It takes time,” said Mahumapelo.
Mahumapelo also spoke strongly against crime in the area and urged the church to partner with government to fight evil crimes.
“We want to join hands with the church and our traditional authorities to ensure that we stop the scourge of rape, murder, drugs and other evils in our society. It is totally unacceptable to allow this kind of crimes to flourish in our society,” said Mahumapelo.
Organised under the theme “Those who are far from You will perish,” the conference started on May 5 and ended on Mother’s Day.
“We invited the Premier to address us as the church and tell us about government programmes that resonate with the ambition of the church. For instance, a woman was raped and killed in our community yesterday hence we want to work with the government in addressing such evil crimes,” said the church’s Circuit Chairperson Lydia Pelesa.
Mahumapelo was accompanied by Moses Kotane Local Municipality Mayor Fetsang Mokati.
