Deputy Minister Buti Manamela hosts career expo in Limpopo, 23 Nov

Career expo to give learners a hands-on experience

The Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Science and Technology, Buti Manamela, will host an expo in the Waterberg District Municipality in Limpopo to showcase the career opportunities offered by science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

The expo is part of the Department of Science and Innovation's Science Engagement Strategy, which is aimed at making the general public cognisant of STEM and their many benefits. Learners are encouraged to study mathematics and science, as they are gateway subjects to a wide variety of career paths and give young people better career prospects.

The expo will feature over 20 interactive exhibitions highlighting various principles, concepts and applications of STEM. The learners will also have an opportunity to participate in experiments.

Among the exhibitors will be the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory, the South African National Space Agency, the South African Weather Service, the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement, and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, and higher education institutions like the Universities of Pretoria and South Africa.

The Waterberg and Lephalale Technical and Vocational Education and Training Colleges are expected to provide learners with information about study opportunities offered at these institutions.

The Department of Science and Innovation has partnered with the Limpopo Department of Basic Education and the Waterberg District Municipality. The area is known for palaeontology and tin-mining.
