Labour hosts Career Counsellors workshop at University of Pretoria, 22 Sept

Career counsellors converge to deliberate on latest trends   

The University of Pretoria in a partnership with the Department of Labour’s Public Employment Services (PES) Branch will on Thursday (22 September) host a workshop for Career Counsellors to discuss latest methodologies in the field.

This interactive workshop will provide an overview of the steps needed to help youth plan and prepare for employment. Participants will review and practise using relevant materials including:

(a) tools for assessing student strengths, preferences and interests,
(b) strategies for developing career goals,
(c) resources for teaching employment skills, and
(d) ideas for providing work experiences.

More than 100 Career counsellors are expected to attend the workshop. It will be attended by expert delegates from the Department of Labour; University of Pretoria; the Department of Higher Education and Training; and the National Youth Development Agency.

The workshop will be held at the Auditorium, Department of Educational Psychology, University of Pretoria Groenkloof Campus at Preller Street. It will start at 9h00.

Held under the theme: “Counselling youth on entering employment” – the workshop is expected to be addressed by Dr Lauren Linstrom from the University of Oregon in the United States on the subject of  youth employment counselling.

Dr Maximus Sefotho and Head of Department at the University of Pretoria is also expected to address the workshop. The workshop will also be addressed by Department of Labour Chief Director of PES’ Workers Services, Sagren Govender and PES’ Director: Work-seeker Support, Emily Maneli.

The discussion of the workshop will also focus on career development and strategies; informal career assessment and planning tools; preparing for work (through vocational education and training), and facilitating employment opportunities.
