Parliament notes Broadcasting Amendment Bill

The Portfolio Committee on Communications has noted the presentation on the Broadcasting Amendment Bill as presented by the Department of Communications.

“We noted the presentation on the Bill but cannot discuss it currently until we get down to the nitty-gritty of conducting public hearings,” said the Ms Dikeledi Tsotetsi, Acting Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Communications.

As part of the amendments, the Bill seeks to replace the role of the National Assembly in the appointment and removal of non-executive members of the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) with that of the Minister. The Acting Director-General of the Department of Communications, Mr Ndivhuho Munzhelele, said that the Bill would also provide for the Minister to appoint a nomination committee to make recommendations to the Minister for the appointment of non-executive members of the board.
