Deputy Minister Thabang Makwetla opens Brandvlei Correctional Centre bakery, 1 Jul

The Deputy Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Mr Thabang Makwetla, will officially open a state of the art bakery at Brandvlei Correctional Centre in the Western Cape on 01 July 2016, and proceed to  Zwelethemba Old Age Home to hand over loaves of bread and other food parcel.

The opening of the Brandvlei Bakery will be the latest addition of the department’s effort to contribute towards self-sufficiency within the institution and food security in the surrounding needy communities. The new bakery can produce up to 1 700 loaves of bread per day to supply the Brandvlei Correctional Centre and Breederiver Correctional Centre. The bakery will assist both Brandvlei and Breederiver Correctional Centres to deliver a loaf of bread at one-third of the open market rate for a loaf of bread and will help save up to R400 000 per year.

The new bakery, housed in an old kitchen at Brandvlei Medium B, amounted to just over R1.5 million and was refurbished using DCS resources including manpower. The bakery will be used for skills development for offenders on the pre-release programme.
