The Minister of Home Affairs, Malusi Gigaba, will on Wednesday, 7 September 2016, meet with Lesotho nationals residing in Rustenburg, North West, as part of rounding up application processes for the Lesotho Special Permit.
In June 2016, the Department of Home Affairs announced a three-month extension following a request by the Lesotho authorities to extend the closing date for applications to allow more time for Basotho nationals to apply. The Lesotho Government has deployed staff at various centres to facilitate birth registration and ID enrolment.
The Lesotho Special Permit is issued under the special dispensation for Lesotho nationals who work, study or do business in South Africa and had been in the country in such capacity before 30 September 2015. Special permits are issued only to Lesotho citizens registered in the National Population Register of Lesotho. The programme was launched on 01 February 2016.
