The MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Mrs. N.S. Leeto would like to take this opportunity to congratulate 6 Athletes and 1 Coach from the Free State that will be representing Team SA at the 2016 Region 5 u/20 Games in Luanda, Angola from 9 -19 December 2016.
This is the seventh version of the games. The bulk of the squad will come from Athletics, Football, Netball & Swimming.
It is at games like these where Rio Olympic Gold Medalist and World Record Holder, Wayde van Niekerk, first made his mark on the International Sporting Scene. These athletes and coach are all products from the Free State and are supported by the Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation with Sport Science Services and Conditioning at the FS Sport Science Institute, they are:
- Carien Sander & Tharina vd Walt - Athletics
- Mosa Thetsane, Juan de Bruin, Chante Labuschagne – Judo
- Danelle Lochner – Netball
- Preston Davids – Judo (Coach)
“Sport is a key instrument we can use not only to promote a healthy lifestyle but moreover, we can use sport to promote social cohesion within our society. These athletes remind us, as a province; of the potential we have to compete among the best in the world in the arena of sport hence they are shining on our behalf at an international level” said MEC Leeto.
