As part of Africa Month celebrations, the Minister of Arts and Culture joined by authors, experts, poets and public intellectuals will today, 23 May 2017, host a colloquium on Black insiders and culture outsiders: Celebrating the legacy of Pan-Africanism and youth literary culture. The colloquium is part of a series of colloquia programme “Conversation with the continent” that are being conducted by the department around the country. Africa Month takes place under the theme, “The Year of OR Tambo: Building a Better Africa and a Better World” to celebrate the legacy of OR Tambo and to promote African Unity. Today’s topic takes its title and inspiration from the writings of Zimbabwean author, Dambudzo Marechera who passed on 30 years ago in his 30s. It speaks to the role of the writer as part of a culture of belonging and unbelonging at the same time. It also addresses questions of race, gender and being young and black in the world.
