Arts and Culture hosts colloquium on Media and African Story, 13 May

Arts and Culture to host the Colloquium on Media and the African Story as part of Africa Month

The Department of Arts and Culture will host the colloquium on Media and the African Story on Friday, 13 May 2016 at Hyatt Hotel, Rosebank as part of the Africa Month intensive programme that will be taking place throughout the month of May under the theme, “Building a Better Africa and a Better World.”

The Month of May has been declared Africa Month, to celebrate the founding of the Organisation of African Unity on 25 May 1963, it was on this date that the 25 May was declared as Africa Day as a symbol of unity amongst all Africans.  Africa Month also acknowledges the progress that we, as Africans, have made in the continent in addressing collectively the challenges that we face such as armed conflict, climate change, and poverty.

During his Budget Vote speech in Parliament on Tuesday, 10 May 2016, Minister Mthethwa said that the focus of the 2016 edition of Africa Month is community engagement, programming in all parts of the country and in all arts disciplines and in partnership with other sectors culminating in a music event towards the end of the month to celebrate the cultures of the continent and in honour of those who founded the Organisation of African Unity on 25 May 1963.

Termed the Festival of Ideas, the Africa Month programme that will feature all aspects of arts, culture and heritage including media will aim at strengthening the socio, cultural, economic and political relations among African nations.

It is through the media that the African story and narratives get conveyed to thus the Department of Arts and Culture has brought together some prominent media practitioners to deliberate on this very topic in an attempt to build a social cohesive society thus achieving the Africa vision of a better African continent.
