Agriculture Forestry and Fisheries on appeal against Registrar of the Animal Improvement Act, 1998

Appeal lodged against the Registrar of Animal Improvement Act, 1998 (Act No. 62 of 1998)

The South African Boerboel Breeders Society (SABBS) has lodged an appeal against the Registrar of the Animal Improvement Act, 1998 (Act no. 62 of 1998), for not accepting the SABBS constitution and for not granting approval for the export of the so-called Black Boerboel. The constitution was approved at a Special General Meeting (SGM) of SABBS held in December 2015.

At a meeting held with the Registrar on 1 December 2015, SABBS representatives emphasised that, they were not party to the appeal and that it was lodged by the Black Boerboel breeders without the consent of the society.

In order to address the concerns from the Boerboel breeders and interested parties, the Acting Director-General for the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Mr Mortimer Mannya has appointed an appeal board to be chaired by Advocate Masenyeletsa Simon Phaswane to evaluate the appeal lodged against the Registrar of Animal Improvement Act,1998 ( Act Nr.62 of 1998).

In the interest of the Boerboel breed, and in order to keep Boerboel breeders and interested parties up to date with events regarding this breed, the outcome of this process will be made available to the public upon conclusion of the evaluation by the appeal board.
