Deputy Minister Thabang Makwetla launches Art-Gallery and convenes Youth Imbizo, 21 Jun

The Deputy Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Mr Thabang Makwetla MP, will officially open an Art Gallery in Klerksdorp on the morning of 21 June 2016, and address an Anti-crime Youth Imbizo in the afternoon. The launch of the Art Gallery is aimed at optimising the potential of young people including parolees and probationers. The Deputy Minister will host the two events in collaboration with the Honourable Mayor of Matlosana Local Municipality, Cllr. Michael Khaoue.

The Imbizo is aimed at fostering unmediated engagement between various spheres of government and stakeholders on the one hand, as well as young people on the other, on finding solutions to challenges facing the youth of South Africa today. The dialogue will also enhance levels of collaboration by various players in developing young people as a fitting tribute to the Class of 1976, whose bravery and vision is being celebrated this year, forty years on.

Youth constitutes over two-thirds of inmates incarcerated in the Department of Correctional Services, an indication of both youth involvement in more serious crimes as well as the growing youth population of South Africa. The Imbizo further aims to inspire youth to lead crime free and productive lives by channelling their energies to positive and productive activities.
