Gauteng Legislature hosts annual Sector Parliament for senior citizens, 7 Oct

Themed “Following up on our commitments to the Gauteng Senior Citizens”, the Gauteng Provincial Legislature’s annual Sector Parliament for Senior Citizens will convene on Friday, 7th October 2016. The platform enables senior citizens from all across the Province to engage with their elected political leadership on issues of service delivery, empowerment, promotion and maintenance of senior citizens’ rights; well-being; safety and security.

This year’s Sector Parliament will address issues of: Senior citizens facing challenges with indigent policies; Illegal deductions on pension taking advantage of the senior citizens; and Implementation of health and safety standards as per the Older Persons Act.

The GPL is hosting this Sector Parliament as part of its Constitutional mandates of oversight, law-making and public participation; also commemorating the United Nations Assembly declared International Day for Older Person (1st October annually). The GPL is further guided by the Act for Older Persons (Act No. 13 of 2006), which provides for the safety and security of Senior Citizens; the management of their residential facilities and protection from abuse.

The 2016 Senior Citizens’ Parliament is scheduled to convene as follows:

Participation is anticipated from various leadership structures and society organizations, including: Members of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature (MPLs); Premier of Gauteng; Speaker of the City of Johannesburg; Members of the Executive Council (MECs) for Health and Social Development; South African Older Persons Forum; South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC); Care givers to older people; Past speakers from other Sector Parliament (Senior Citizens Parliaments); as well as Veterans leagues from political parties.
