CoGTA Deputy Minister Andries Nel will attend the 11th German Federal Congress on National Urban Development Policy in Hamburg, Germany

The Deputy Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), honourable Andries Nel will attend the 11th German Federal Congress on National Urban Development Policy taking place in Schuppen 52, in Hamburg, Germany from 12 to 14 June 2017.

The congress will be held under the theme - ’10 Years of the Liepzig Charter on Sustainable European Cities’. The Congress is the central forum for urban development policy in Germany, and about 1,000 participants are expected.

Deputy Minister Nel received an invitation from Mr Gunther Adler, State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB), to take part in the 11th Federal Congress.

The BMUB is hosting this Congress with its partners on national urban development policy in Germany, the Conference of German Building Ministers, the German Cities Association, and the German Association of Towns and Municipalities.

The cooperative relationship between CoGTA and the BMUB (representing South Africa and Germany) in the field of urban development, has therefore, been a robust one, and has been sustained over many years. In respect to the deepening of the partnership between South Africa and the BMUB, an informative bi-lateral meeting was held between Deputy Minister Nel and the State Secretary Gunther Adler.

This congress will therefore by an opportunity to reflect upon how our respective national urban policies can advance the objectives of sustainable development and inclusive urbanisation, as well as become integrated with global commitments made through the New Urban Agenda, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Sendai Agreement, the Paris Agreement and others.

Besides Deputy Minister Nel going to share best case studies on our work in building a sustainable Local Government, he will also talk to South Africa’s progress in implementing the Integrated Urban Development Framework (IUDF).

This congress will therefore go a long way in assisting to guide the implementation of plans, thus responding to how we manage our urban agendas to meet these multiple challenges, interdependencies, commitments and opportunities.
