The Minister of Water and Sanitation, Ms. Nomvula Mokonyane, will over the weekend travel to the Eastern Cape province in an attempt to resolve the current impasse at Amatola Water Board that has led to strike action by members of the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU).
Amatola Water Board supplies water to several key cities and towns in the Eastern Cape such as Buffalo City, Mthatha, Grahamstown, Port Alfred etc. and as such the strike has the potential to adversely affect the supply of water to citizens in the affected areas of supply.
Tomorrow, 08 October 2016, the Minister will meet with the leadership of SAMWU and thereafter the Board and Executive of Amatola Water Board to seek lasting solutions to employee concerns.
The Minister wishes to reassure residents in the Amatola Water Board's water supply areas that all effort is being made to ensure minimal disruption, if any, to their water supply.
