Police arrest alleged Port Elizabeth gang leader

The concerted efforts by the Hawks-led multi-disciplinary Task Team involving the detectives, Crime Intelligence and the Tactical Response Team (TRT) in the Eastern Cape has led to the swift arrest of a 29-year-old suspect who shot randomly, killing four people and critically injuring one in what was believed gang-related violence in the Northern Area of Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape on Sunday evening.

With the National Head of the Hawks Lieutenant General Mthandazo Ntlemeza and the Provincial Commissioner of Eastern Cape Lieutenant General Celiwe Binta visiting the scene and assuring the residents that no stone will be left unturned in pursuit of the perpetrators, the officers were super-charged went out of their way to restore peace and stability.

While the suspect was still fantasising on having literally gotten away with murder, the team pounced on him at the Stanford Road Off Ramp along the N2 road in Gelvandale, where he was a passenger in a vehicle on Tuesday morning.

The National Head of the Hawks Lieutenant General Mthandazo Ntlemeza praised the Task Team and said the efforts to restore order, peace and stability in the area. He said the partnership between the Hawks and the Eastern Cape police will be provide remedy in the gang-related problems in the area.

His words were echoed by the Provincial Commissioner of the Eastern Cape  Lt General Celiwe Binta who said the police in the Province are committed to fight these heinous crimes and their manifestation with all the resources at their disposal. “The Task Team worked tirelessly following up information which led to the arrest of the suspect and we are confident that more suspects will be arrested soon. The days of criminals terrorising our law-abiding citizens are over and we will ensure that our members keep criminals at bay at all time”, Lt General Binta.
