Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries launches Arbor Week in Tzaneen, 1 Sept

The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in partnership with the Limpopo Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and Total South Africa will launch this year’s National Arbor Week on Thursday, 1 September at Nkowankowa Stadium in the Greater Tzaneen Municipality.

The day of the launch will be an opportunity to showcase an Agroforestry Project, the NTL Baraka Eco-Farming and Tourism Project that the provincial department supports in the Letsitele area, located about 54KM from Tzaneen. The project showcases the importance of forests in addressing food security, multiple land use approaches and the importance of forests in stimulating rural economies. The project is owned by Ms Nomsa Ngwenya, a winner of the DAFF Female Entrepreneur Awards in 2013 in the Top Entrepreneur Commercial category.

National Arbor Week is celebrated annually from 1 -7 September and is a joint national and provincial effort in recognising the importance of trees in communities and encouraging awareness on the need to protect indigenous trees and forests.

Arbor Week will be celebrated under the theme; “Forests and Water”. The theme has been adopted from the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF) theme for the International Day of Forests celebrated on 21 March annually.
