The Select Committee on Education and Recreation welcomes the announcement by the Department of Basic Education of an agreement between the Department and Traditional Leadership in Vuwani to a process to restart schooling in the area. This agreement will ensure that the constitutionally enshrined right of education for the learners in the area is protected and promoted.
The disruption of education services and vandalism of property in the area represents one of the lowest points in our countries democratic order. The Committee reiterates its strong conviction that no grievance, no matter how severe, should be used as moral ground for destruction of property and disruption of schooling to the extent witnessed in Vuwani. The Committee further urges the people of Vuwani and the surrounding areas to be mindful of the centrality of education in defeating poverty and inequality especially in an impoverished area like Vuwani.
The efforts of all stakeholders that worked behind the scenes to ensure the resolution of this impasse are greatly appreciated.
“The true mark of our great country is the ability to find amicable solutions to tough situation through collaborative effort. The Committee commends the dedication by the department in trying to find solutions to the situation. We urge speedy implementation of the catch-up plan to ensure that learners can complete their syllabus before exam,” said Ms Lungelwa Zwane, the Chairperson of the Committee.
The Committee is planning to visit the area to ascertain progress in ensuring that teaching and learning happens.
