Adjusted alert level 3 lockdown in numbers – 11 January 2021

  • Nearly 190 000 – new coronavirus (COVID-19) infections recorded since New Year’s Day, by 11 January 2021.
  • More than 4 600 – COVID-19 deaths that South Africa recorded in 2021, by 11 January 2021.
  • More than 1,2 million – a cumulative number of COVID-19 cases that South Africa has recorded since the start of the pandemic, by 11 January 2021.
  • More than 33 000 – deaths that South Africa has recorded since the start of the pandemic, by 11 January 2021.
  • More than 148 000 – people that have been admitted to hospital in South Africa since the start of the pandemic, by 11 January 2021.
  • Over 15 000 – people with COVID-19 in hospitals nationally, by 11 January 2021.
  • 50 people – the number of people permitted to attend funerals, with social distancing, hand sanitising and mask wearing.
  • 20 – land ports of entry to be closed until 15 February 2021 for general entry and departure.
  • 67% – the estimated level needed to reach ‘herd immunity’ or ‘population immunity’ when enough people are vaccinated, according to scientists.
  • Around 40 million – people in South Africa expected to reach the estimated 67% level of ‘herd immunity’ or ‘population immunity’ when enough people are vaccinated, according to scientists.
  • Around 10% – the South African population that will benefit from vaccine doses received through the World Health Organization’s COVAX facility.
