The 67 Minutes of good service and giving declared by United Nation as International Nelson Mandela Day, commemorated today. On the birthday of the struggle icon, the Department of Energy honored the struggle icon through activities that highlighted the importance of youth development, a cause known to be close to the heart of the former President.
This day is commemorated across the world as a day to honor the legacy of Madiba, and to encourage a movement for doing good in celebrating his life.
The Minister of Energy, Ms Mmamoloko Kubayi, joined by partners from the energy sector, conducted her 67 minutes of community service at Odi Hospital in Mabapane and at Aga Sechaba Youth Centre in Ga-Rankuwa. The 67 minutes is in honour of the 67 years that President Nelson Mandela dedicated to the public service fighting for social justice during his life time.
Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi participated and offered her service in partnership with SANEDI, Enel Green Power South Africa and the local area leadership; the service is aimed at inspiring individuals, especially the youth, to take action to help make the world better and in so doing build a global movement for good. The theme for this years’ Mandela Month Commemoration is: #ActionAgainstPoverty
At the hospital, Minister served breakfast to the female surgical ward, handed toys to the Paediatric Ward as well as wished Nkateko Hlungwane who was born at 01hr10 a happy birthday.
She concluded her commemoration activities at Aga Sechaba Youth Centre where she assisted with cleaning of the interior and exterior, renovated and electrified the classrooms of the Centre, donated office furniture, computers, classroom desks, chairs and stationary.
Enel Green Power South Africa Country Manager, (an Independent Power Producer) William Price, who accompanied the Minister at the two programs, said as a responsible corporate citizen, it is important for the company to join hands with government in making a difference in the lives of all South Africans.
In concluding, Minister Kubayi emphasized the key message that, Nelson Mandela was a great advocate for the youth and youth development, and his legacy reminds us of the important role that the youth could play towards building a better South Africa and better world.
