South Africa will be hosting the 2016 Open Government Partnership (OGP) Africa Regional Meeting at Century City Conference Centre, Cape Town from 5 to 6 May 2016 under the theme: “Open Government for Sustainable Development in Africa”.

The event will provide governments and civil society representatives with an opportunity to engage on the role of open government in the implementation of Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development.

The Open Government Partnership (OGP) is an international, voluntary effort to improve government performance, encourage civic participation and enhance government responsiveness to people. It is a response to the 21st century call for more transparent, effective and accountable governments with institutions that empower citizens and are responsive to their aspirations. In achieving this goal, government openness becomes a key anchor.

Over five years the OGP membership has grown from eight countries to 66 of which ten are on the Africa continent. South Africa became a member of the OGP initiative in 2011 and took over the chairpersonship of this initiative from Mexico in October 2015.

The 2016 Open Government Partnership Africa Regional Summit in South Africa will be the third regional meeting hosted in Africa. However, it will be the first in South Africa.
