Speaker considering notice of motion on establishment of Ad Hoc Committee
National Assembly (NA) Speaker, Mr Max Sisulu, is currently considering the Democratic Alliance’s request for the appointment of an ad hoc committee in relation to the findings of the Public Protector on the security upgrades to President Jacob Zuma’s residence at Nkandla.
The findings are in the Public Protector’s report entitled “Report on an investigation into allegations of impropriety and unethical conduct relating to the installation and implementation of security measures by the Department of Public Works at and in respect of the private residence of President Jacob Zuma at Nkandla in the KwaZulu Natal province”.
The Public Protector has not submitted her report to Parliament. However, she reportedly would be submitting it to the President for perusal and comment in accordance with provisions of the Executive Members’ Ethics Act of 1998.
In terms of this Act, and as per the Public Protector’s pronouncement when she made her report public, the President must, within a reasonable time, but not later than 14 days, submit a copy of the Public Protector’s report to the NA together with his comments and a report on any remedial steps taken or intended to be taken.
The NA is awaiting the outcome of this process. Once received, the report and other documents received would be tabled and would then formally serve before the NA and its Committees.
Leader of the opposition, Ms Lindiwe Mazibuko, requested establishment of an ad hoc committee to process a motion to remove the President from office. This request was communicated in a letter to Mr Sisulu, dated 20 March.
