Social Development strengthen child care services

Social Development  to strengthen child care services, says Minister Bathabile Dlamini

4 May 2012
With
effect from 1 April, the Department of Social Development will pay a
subsidy of R15 per child per day to registered Early Child Development
(ECD) centres.

This was announced by Minister of Social Development, Ms Bathabile Dlamini when she tabled the 2012/13 budget vote.

This amount, said the Minister, is designed to achieve parity in the financing of ECD services.

In
order to maximise the full benefits of ECD services, the Minister's
department will spend R40 million to conduct an audit of all ECD
facilities in the country over the next two years.

To assure
that children have access to vital services and support, the Minister
has promised to consolidate services offered to orphaned and vulnerable
children, especially those living in child headed households.

The
department will also be recruiting and orientating the first contingent
of child and youth care workers, as part of the 10 000 target to be
trained over the Medium Term Expenditure Framework period (MTEF).
