Correctional Services reduces overcrowding in prisons, says Minister

of Correctional Services, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, says her department
has reduced overcrowding in prisons over the past year. The Minister was
speaking during her Departmental Budget Vote speech in Parliament.
The
Minister said measures taken by the department to bring down the number
of prisoners in custody include electronic monitoring, special
remission of sentences and establishing halfway houses.
The
Minister said 106 paroled prisoners have been tagged to date. The
Minister also confirmed that the department had started releasing
offenders who do not pose serious risk to society. The department has
set up its first Halfway House to prepare juvenile offenders for
re-integration into communities.
