Minister Naledi
Pandor issues unabridged birth certificates

4 March 2013

As part of the
Department of Home Affairs decision to issue only unabridged birth
certificates to newborn babies, the Minister of Home Affairs, Naledi
Pandor issued the first unabridged birth certificate at the Parklane
Hospital in Johannesburg on 4 March.

The Department
of Home Affairs no longer issues abridged birth certificates to new born
babies. Only unabridged birth certificates, which contain more
information, including the details of both parents, with added security
features, are issued to new babies.

This initiative
forms part of the department’s commitment to securing the identity and
citizenship of its people, improving service delivery and ultimately
becoming a paperless, fully modernised,
department.
