Smart card IDs to be available by year end, says Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma

new ID smart card will be issued within the next six months. Initially,
the card will only be issued to people who are applying for an ID for
the first time and those who have lost their IDs. First time applicants
will get the card for free, but those  applying for a reissue will pay
R140. The smart cards will then be rolled out to the rest of the
population within two years.

This is according to Home Affairs Minister, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, who was speaking at the National Press Club.

According
to the Minister, the new card will have visible and invisible security
features, including a chip and a barcode containing information of the
cardholder . They will be virtually impossible to forge.
