Social
security is a human right, says President Jacob Zuma on Human Rights Day
Since 1994, the Government has expanded the delivery of social
services to needy South Africans. This was said byPresident Jacob Zuma in his
Human Rights Day speech.
Addressing hundreds of people gathered at Freedom Square in Kliptown, the
President said the democratic government had provided 87% of rural households
with water and 75% with access to sanitation.
“The Constitution specifically mentions social security as a human right,” said
the President.
The President put the number of people who receive social grants at 15-million.
Eight million children obtain free education from no fee schools. To improve
access to health facilities, the President said the government is building 29
hospitals in rural and urban areas, with 17 more being planned and designed.
According to the President, the Government has built 2.8 million houses under
the national housing programme since 1994. Read more
