Home Affairs unveils smart ID cards in honour of Mandela |

Home Affairs Minister Naledi Pandor officially unveiled the new smart identity cards on 18 July 2013 at the Union Buildings. The date marks Mandela Day, former President Nelson Mandela's 95th birthday. A smart ID card for Nelson Mandela was handed to his daughter Zinzi Mandela at the official launch of smart ID card. The first smart identity cards were handed over to President Jacob Zuma, Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe, former President Thabo Mbeki, former President FW de Klerk, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, Ms Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, and fellow struggle veterans Sophie de Bruyn, Andrew Mlangeni, Ahmed Kathrada, and Dennis Goldberg.
