Science and Technology Minister Derek Hanekom to address a conference on knowledge economy

The Minister of Science and Technology, Derek Hanekom, will address the Knowledge Economy Network (KEN) Forum in Cape Town on 22 October, an international event that brings together experts on the development of the knowledge economy in society.

The two-day KEN Forum is expected to attract about 120 participants from at least 20 countries, including policy makers, stakeholders, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and academics. The theme for 2013 is “Promoting Innovation through Education and Research”.

Given that the Department of Science and Technology’s (DST) Ten-Year Innovation Plan (2008 – 2018) is now almost mid-way on its implementation in moving South Africa towards a knowledge-based economy, the Forum presents a platform for South Africa to demonstrate the progress made and highlight the challenges so far.

It also provides the country with an opportunity to build and enhance strategic partnerships and networks with global players in the knowledge economy field. In the context of the recent Innovation Summit held by the Department with key stakeholders in the private and public sector, the KEN Forum provides a platform for further dialogue in strengthening various components of South Africa’s science and technology landscape.

Among topics of discussion are education and training for an innovative society; inclusive innovation for all; the role of technology transfer agencies and incubators and Africa-Europe partnerships.

The Brussels-based KEN offers a platform for knowledge society development, with particular emphasis on human capital. Its principle objective is to contribute to conditions to facilitate the implementation of the above criteria in the broader international community.
