Roll back malaria progress and impact series, focus on South Africa

The South African Department of Health and the Roll Back Malaria Partnership (RBM) will release a new report, the RBM Progress and Impact Series,  focus on South Africa. The series documents South Africa’s phenomenal success in malaria control, a program that spans more than seventy years.

The progress and impact series details South Africa’s long and proud track record of malaria control over the past seven decades. Malaria, which was once common in urban centres such as Durban, has now been pushed back to the border regions with Mozambique and Zimbabwe thanks to sustained investment in the program.

Aside from saving lives, the disease control program has opened up rural areas for economic development, lifting people out of poverty. The report explains that South Africa’s success can largely be attributed to the country’s community of well-trained malaria scientists and researchers backed with sustained funding from national government.

The progress and impact series not only documents South Africa’s past successes, but charts the way forward by providing the key recommendations for achieving the country’s goal of eliminating malaria within its borders by 2018.
