President Zuma returns from the G20 Summit

President Jacob Zuma has arrived in Pretoria today, 5 November 2011, from the G20 Summit in Cannes, France.

President Zuma said South Africa was pleased with the summit’s commitment to an Action Plan for Growth and Jobs, which is an undertaking to renew efforts to combat unemployment and promote decent jobs, especially for the youth and others who have been most affected by the economic crisis.

“The focus on job creation is in line with South Africa’s own domestic focus on economic transformation to promote inclusive growth and decent jobs,” said President Zuma.

The G20 Summit took place against the background of risks to the global economy and the Eurozone crisis, including the situation in Greece. The President indicated he was encouraged by the work being undertaken to resolve the Eurozone crisis which has a potential to seriously and negatively affect the global economy.

During the summit, President Zuma assured the world of South Africa’s readiness to host COP 17/CMP7 in December 2011.

At the climate change session, President Zuma stated:

“We are accountable to the global citizens who suffer daily from the impacts of climate change, and hold high expectations for effective solutions to the threat that climate change presents to their livelihood, quality of life, dignity and in many cases their very survival”.
