President Zuma concludes a successful Siyahlola Presidential Monitoring visit in Muyexe, Limpopo

President Jacob Zuma has concluded his Siyahlola Presidential Monitoring visit to Muyexe village in Giyani, Limpopo Province. The visit was intended to assess progress in various developments in the village, which was declared a pilot project under the Comprehensive Rural Development Programme in 2009 because of its high levels of poverty, unemployment and severe infrastructure backlogs. This visit to the Muyexe site was therefore part of the Presidency’s performance monitoring and evaluation programme.

The President and eight Cabinet Ministers visited the Muyexe Thusong Service Centre, the Muyexe Early Childhood Development Centre, Macena Gardens, the Muyexe Water Purification Plant and Reservoir, and concluded with an engagement with the community at the Muyexe Sports Ground for more intense feedback.

Prior to the implementation of the CRDP, Muyexe was characterised by high unemployment and poverty levels and poor access to basic services including water, sanitation, housing energy, as well as health. In the programmes visited, the President noted progress with housing and sanitation, where COGHSTA and the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform have constructed 383 houses, including 422 toilets to the households and four ablution facilities in each school, with 130 more toilets still under construction for the new households.

Water supply will be increased through 26 boreholes to be drilled in the area. The Primary school was improved with four classrooms and the secondary school was also provided with computers, projector and big screen to enhance learning processes. The Macena co-operative has grown significantly from a small non-commercial venture to a big enterprise selling to the local market and to the Spar Supermarket in Giyani.

The President expressed satisfaction at the progress made in the area, and emphasised that much more needs to be done to complete the outstanding projects.
