Premier to launch 'Football Friday' at Philippi Stadium

Premier Helen Zille will launch 'Football Friday' in the Western Cape at the Philippi Stadium on Friday, afternoon 30 October 2009, at 15h00.

While South Africans are encouraged to don the jerseys of their favourite football teams all over the country, the Premier will mark Friday, 30 October before the kick-off of the 2010 FIFA World Cup (FWC) by sporting the sweater of her favourite team.

The Philippi Stadium will also host a friendly match between the construction workers who are upgrading the stadium to become a world class football facility and a team from the neighbouring South African Police Service (SAPS) Training Academy. Together with the Athlone Stadium, the Philippi Stadium will be a Venue Specific training Site (VSTS) during the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

As part of the legacy of the 2010 FWC, by spending R54 million on upgrading the stadium, the Provincial Government of the Western Cape is ensuring that a world-class facility is available to the people of this province.

Philippi Stadium is situated in one of the more disadvantaged parts of Cape Town, but boasts the highest number of registered amateur players in the country. The stadium is well located near the Philippi Railway Station and long distance bus terminus. It is easily accessible by public transport and geographically central in Cape Town.

The stadium now accommodates 3 000 spectators. Changing rooms with ablution facilities have been upgraded. A media facility and Operational area for security services are being added. These are necessary upgrades for the FIFA tournament, as well as useful legacy for post World Cup use. Construction will be completed by mid December 2009 and the pitch ready for use in May 2010.

A request for proposals for prospective tenants has been issued and applications proposal.
