Premier Hazel Jenkins and MEC Pauline Williams to unveil the Memorial in honour of the Upington 26

The Northern Cape Premier Hazel Jenkins together with the Provincial Sport, Arts and Culture MEC Pauline Williams will be unveiling the Memorial in honour of the Upington 26 on Monday, 21 March 2011.

The unveiling of the memorial will be held at Pabalelo Stadium in Upington in the Siyanda District. The premier will also launch the township rejuvenation project that will see a creation of thousands of job opportunities for the locals. The event will also form part of the provincial government’s celebrations of Human Rights Day.

The Upington 26 is a group of committed cadres who were falsely accused by the apartheid junta of murder and other crimes. They spent varying lengths of time in prison with some of them even being sentenced to death. These valiant patriots were ultimately released subsequent to an appeal against their sentences.

The Northern Cape Sport, Arts and Culture department invites your organisation to become part of this historic occasion as we will be honouring the martyrs who have sacrificed their lives in pursuit of the noble goals of freedom.

Premier Jenkins will deliver a keynote address which will culminate in entertainment by local artists such as Dr Victor and others. The Northern Cape Sport, Arts and Culture Department, is committed to “Working together to protect human dignity for all”
