Premier appoints new MEC

Gauteng Premier Nomvula has appointed Nandi Mayathula-Khoza as the new MEC for Agriculture and Rural Development. Mayathula-Khoza takes over from the former MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko who stepped down last week.

Mokonyane announced the appointment of Mayathula-Khoza during her state of the province address in Kliptown, Soweto, on Tuesday, 9 June 2009.

Before joining the “team Gauteng,” Mayathula-Khoza was the City of Johannesburg’s mayoral committee member for community development. Prior to that, she was a speaker in the same municipality between 2000 and 2006. She was born in Johannesburg, and she once lived in Swaziland as a student in exile.

Mayathula-Khoza completed her BSc degree in Science and Mathematics in Swaziland. After her parents’ death, she returned home to start working. She also holds a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of the Witwatersrand.

Mayathula-Khoza taught mathematics and science for three years before switching to politics and governance. She is married and has four children.
