Only two out of six farms inspected by the Department of Labour in Limpopo were found to be compliant with labour laws, Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant told hundreds of people at an Imbizo in Mahwelereng , Limpopo today (Saturday).
Her address followed a day long campaign by six teams of inspectors who visited farms in the Mokopane area. Oliphant said those found to be in the wrong were issued with compliance orders with the promise by the department to return in 60 days to ensure that the transgressions are corrected.
The Minister said, “ the areas of non compliance include written particulars of employment not being in place, personal safety equipment not provided for , electrical certificate of compliance non existent, lack of proper records of machinery, no proper signage, no incident register and reports and documentation not being available. "
The Minister said part of the reason for targeting the farming sector was to look at vulnerable sectors in the economy. She said the department would do its best to ensure that health and safety of employees were not comprised.
Speaking at the same event, Pinky Kekana, Limpopo MEC for Roads and Transport said she was happy that the multitudes present rose issues pertinent to Imbizo. "We have the responsibility as government departments to deliver services to our people."
Those present also made maximum use of variety of government services present ranging from Compensation Fund, Home Affairs, South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), mobile health clinic among others.
