North West Provincial Legislature elects Speaker and Premier

Today, 21 May 2014, the North West Provincial Legislature on its 1st Sitting of the 5th Parliament elected Hon. Sussana Tsebe as the Speaker of the North West Provincial Legislature, Hon. Supra Obakeng Rramoeletsi Mahumapelo as the Premier of the North West province, and Hon. Jane Manganyi as the Deputy Speaker of the Legislature.

Thirty-two (32) Members of the Provincial Legislature took an oath or affirmation followed by the nomination and election of the Speaker, Deputy Speaker and Premier; thereafter their swearing in as required by Section 107 read with Section 111(1), Section 128(2) and Section 129 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa. Mme Thandi Modise sent an apology so she will be sworn in at a later stage.

Out of the 33 seats, the African National Congress has 23 seats followed by Economic Freedom Fighters with 5 seats, Democratic Alliance with 4 seats and 1 seat for the Freedom Front Plus.

In welcoming the newly elected MPLs Hon. Speaker Tsebe said she entrusts that the elected will serve and abide by the policies and laws enshrined in the Constitution of the South Africa.
