Learners of Du Noon Primary to start 2017 academic year in brand new school
Today, the Department of Transport and Public Works (DTPW) will officially handover the brand new Du Noon Primary School in Du Noon to the Westen Cape Education Department.
School Principal, Mrs Jeremiah and the school Circuit Manager, Ms Reinette Colyn will officially accept the keys for the new school.
The learners of Du Noon Primary School have previously been temporarily accommodated in prefabricated classrooms in the Du Noon area.
The building of this school required the participation and cooperation of the Western Cape Departments of Education and Transport and Public Works, and forms part of the the Accelerated Schools Infrastructure Delivery Initiative (ASIDI).
The construction of the new school commenced in February 2014 and construction was completed in May 2016. There was, however, a delay in handing over of the school to the client (WCED) as the water pressure in the area was insufficient to operate the fire hydrants and ablution facilities. Clearly we could not allow people to occupy a building under such circumstances.
Our officials worked around the clock to assist the CoCT to restore the necessary water pressure to the school.
I am pleased to announce that the learners will officially commence the 2017 academic year in the brand new school building.
I must thank my officials, in particular the Metro North District Director, Mr Alan Meyer and the school Circuit Manager Ms Colyn, as well as officials from DTPW and the CoCT for their collaboration in ensuring that the water pressure issue was addressed speedily. Because of their efforts, learners can commence the new academic year in their new school.
The new school consists of:
- 31 new classrooms,
- Three grade R classrooms
- Four specialist rooms
- An administration block
- A feeding kitchen
- A computer room
- A multipurpose school hall and a library
- And a sportsfield
I hope that this new school will be transformed into an institution of teaching and learning, where learners are safe and secure, and where quality learning can take place.
The WCED invests heavily in school infrastructure to improve the quality of our schools as teaching and learning spaces, and to meet the growing demands for schooling in the province. We are pleased that we have been able to deliver a school that the community can be proud of, and its learners can thrive in.
