Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport Uber MT statement
Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Ismail Vadi, together with Member of Mayoral Committee for Transport in the City of Johannesburg, Ms Christine Walters, held talks with Uber and the Gauteng Metered Taxi Council (GMTC) to discuss the perceived competitive threat that Uber poses to the metered taxis and resultant on-going intimidation of Uber partner-drivers at selected pick-up points and to consider proposals to resolve the dispute between the parties.
Vadi said that talks were extremely positive and held in a constructive spirit.
Both parties agreed to take active measures to prevent any further acts of intimidation or provocation against one another.
The parties agreed to allow the leadership of the GTMC to consult its membership on its relationship with Uber and to meet again on the 15 July 2015.
The parties also agreed to consider proposals from government, Uber and the GTMC on the future registration and operations of Uber partners, and how current metered taxi operators could be incorporated onto the Uber platform to balance the playing field between stakeholders operating in the same transport space.
