In its endeavor to address issues of skills gap and recruiting professionals into the constructions industry the Department of Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Human Settlements Branch has placed 40 civil construction and building young men and women for work experience according to their specialty.
The learnership contracted youth will gain valuable experience on areas of trades in masonry, tiling, roofing and joinery, for the next three months in a number of labour intensive construction projects in villages around Mahikeng.
In completion of the practical work, the learners are then expected to write the summative assessment test which it would be the last lap of the learnership programme towards achieving their National Qualification Framework (NQF) level 3 certificates.
Earlier this year, the Department secured funding from the Provincial Treasury through the Office of the Premier to implement the programme and contracted 40 unemployed men and women below 35 years for a twelve months learnership programme on building and civil construction (NQF 3) courses with aims to encourage more young people to enter the building construction field.
These learners were recruited from various districts of the province through recruitment processes.
The departmental MEC, Nono Maloyi said the department is faced with a huge challenge of lack of professionals in the construction industry and it intends to recruit and encourage more young unemployed men and women to address the challenge.
“The learnership programme is one of the programmes we are using to as government to address this challenge and we intend to recruit more young people as this will also reduce the high number of unemployment in the country which was one of the priorities outlined by the State President Jacob Zuma during his State of the Nation Address earlier this year,” said Maloyi.
The programme gives an opportunity to work while studying towards a national recognised qualification.
