Z Mkhize on Team KZN at South African Games

KwaZulu-Natal comes out tops in South African (SA) games

29 September 2007

Acting Premier Dr Zweli Mkhize (MEC for Finance and Economic Development)
today congratulated Team KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) once again for an outstanding
performance at the SA Games held in Bloemfontein from 24 to 28 September
2007.

Gauteng, who had won the SA Games from the very inception, was no match for
a well-oiled KZN team that annihilated all their opposition. The Province won
an overwhelming 52 gold medals over Gauteng's 35 with Western Cape a distant
third. Dr Mkhize said that once again KwaZulu-Natal has shown itself not only
for its world-class facilities and its calibre of sporting heroes, but because
of its performance on the field and the tenacity and determination to bring
gold to the Province.

Dr Mkhize said "We send our heartiest congratulations to the administrators
and sports men and women who gave performed exceptionally well for KZN. And
overall to those who have participated in the tournament."

MEC for Sport and Recreation, Mr A. Rajbansi attended the games on behalf of
the province. Dr Mkhize said he attributed the Province's success to its
developmental programmes, the dedication of the sport federations, provincial
academy and the Department of Sport and Re creation.

This partnership has brought the much sought after title home to KZN. Team
KZN featured in a number of finals including netball, football (including women
and disabled men), hockey (men and women), and rugby (men and women). The
highlight of Team KZN's performance was the aquatics team that drowned any
hopes that Gauteng may have nurtured by stroking their way to a haul of 24 gold
medals. The boxing team outscored all opposition with their gutsy performances
and jabbed their way to 3 gold medals and the overall team award. Athletes with
disability put up very credible performances in athletics (winning 9 gold
medals) and in swimming. "This win shows determination, confidence and above
all mettle of the sporting abilities of our sports men and women, and
administrators. Well done on this victory," said Dr Mkhize.
