Water and Sanitation provides water pre and during Coronavirus COVID-19 lockdown

DWS making sure communities get quality water

The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) has been working tirelessly to provide water trucks and water tankers pre- and during the COVID-19 lockdown. In an effort to curb the spike of infections the department has dispersed 1265 tankers and 134 water trucks throughout the Free State.

The Department is not only supplying municipalities with these water tanks and trucks but a team from the Free State DWS is testing the water on a daily basis for its quality. Teams from the department’s Drinking Water and Waste Water Management have been working around the clock testing water from the source as well as from water trucks that deliver the water to the tanks. Constant communication is kept between municipalities and DWS to maximize efforts.

DWS has also procured close to 8000 hand sanitizers and 2400 bars of soap that will be disseminated to all municipalities in the Free State. Hand sanitizers and soaps are earmarked to be allocated to homeless centres.  Partnering with The South African Red Cross Society vulnerable households will be identified to receive hand sanitizers and soaps.

Everyone should still continue to conserve water as South Africa is still a water scarce country and we are heading towards winter season which yields minimum rainfall. All communities are still encouraged to wash their hands at regular intervals utilizing soap and water, as well as heed the call to stay at home.
