W Jacobs on provincial name changes

Western Cape Cultural Affairs and Sport MEC W Jacobs welcome
name changes

13 March 2007

Western Cape Cultural Affairs and Sport MEC Whitey Jacobs responded
positively to the name changes invitation over the weekend. He said: "The
advertisement of the Western Cape Geographical Names Committee in the
mainstream media this past weekend inviting all interested parties,
organisations and individuals to submit their applications for name changes
must be welcomed by all. The Provincial Geographical Names Committee is
providing a window of opportunity at the right time when this is both topical
and necessary to address and ratify certain irrelevant name places under the
competency of provincial and national governments. These names include towns,
suburbs, highways, railway stations including airports.

"It is an opportune moment for all the interested parties to exercise their
right following the right procedures and channels. Importantly, the
Geographical Names Committee is exercising its responsibility as per its
mandate over provincial competencies articulated in the relevant Act. The dawn
of democracy in our country more than a decade ago inherently meant addressing
the socio-cultural history, preservation and celebration of our diverse
heritage. We must regrettably admit that we have been slow in this province in
ensuring that important names were inclusive.

"I believe the time is now for those interested parties and individuals to
demonstrate leadership and responsibility. They should grab this opportunity
with both hands. My department will, through the Geographical Names Committee,
play a critical co-ordinating role in ensuring transparency and inclusivity of
all views expressed. And, I hope this process will share light and clear some
confusion regarding competencies in this regard."
