W Jacobs to meet with musicians, 19 Sept

Musicians urged to unite

19 September 2006

In a call for the union of local musicians, the MEC for Cultural Affairs and
Sport, Whitey Jacobs will hold meetings to urge musicians to work together and
form a structure. This move was triggered by perpetual destitution of some
musicians where some had passed away literally penniless. The department has
found it increasingly difficult to aid individual musicians and incur burial
costs for those who die broke.

In an effort to address some of the challenges of musicians a conference was
held on 6-7 March 2006 and an interim Provincial Structure established to
create a database of all musicians and draft a constitution which will be
discussed and adopted at the next conference to be held in November 2006. MEC
Jacobs decided on a road show to meet with musicians and brief them about these
latest developments and urge them to be part of this process for their own
good. MEC believes the Department would be better positioned to address the
development of the music industry if it is organised.

MEC has already concluded visits to the West Coast, Central Karoo, Eden,
Boland and Overberg regions where musicians had welcomed this initiative.
