Eighteen schools in the southern suburbs will receive a major boost when MEC
for Cultural Affairs and Sport Whitey Jacobs, will on Thursday, 30 March 2006,
deliver 21 sport assistants for better co-ordination and smooth running of
sport programmes at schools.
The deployment of these sport assistants follows the launch of the drive to
revive ailing school sport by MEC Jacobs in January this year. The assistants
will be deployed as full-time trainees to assist the sport masters at these
schools. MEC Jacobs expressed delight at the real prospect of adding value to
the revival of school sport. "I am happy that this little contribution will
help to ensure the ongoing relationships between the schools, the education
department and us and importantly a foundation for the sustainable development
of sport at this critical level,â says Mr Jacobs.
A further 26 sport assistants will be deployed in Nyanga, Phillipi,
Crossroads and Gugulethu area in 30 days after completion of the recruitment
and subsequent training programme. This programme is part of the initiative
piloted in Mannenberg about four years ago as part of the Sport Stepping Stone
(SSS). It has been running successfully in the following areas, Mitchell's
Plain, Khayelitsha, Hanover Park, Bonteheuwel, Elsies River and the Paarl area.
The new deployments will bring a total of 206 sport assistants in various
schools in the Western Cape.
