W Jacobs calls for investigation into death of rugby player

MEC calls for a full investigation into the death of rugby
player

26 June 2006

MEC Jacobs has written a letter to the Boland Rugby Union asking an urgent
investigation into the death rugby player, Riaan Loots, who died after he was
allegedly attacked by a fan of the losing team this past weekend.

"I wish to condemn this act of violence in the strongest possible terms and
hope that the law enforcement agencies will deal decisively with the
perpetrator to send a very strong message that such behaviour has no business
on and off the field. I am confident that Boland Rugby Union will launch a
thorough investigation into this tragedy. I hope that this report will give us
a good basis to launch proactive strategies that would drastically curb such
unwarranted acts of violence and as a collective begin to ensure the safety of
players at all times," says Mr Jacobs.

Mr Jacobs has asked the rugby union to provide him with a detailed report as
soon as possible.
